Diario de León | The quality of the river Sil will be monitored in Toreno with an automatic system

The Miño-Sil Hydrographic Conference will expand the automatic water quality information system with two new stations, one of them located on the Sil River as it passes through Toreno. The civil works, according to sources from the autonomous organisation, are practically finished, as is the case of the Lobios River, in Lobios (Orense).

The project forms part of the European POCTEP RISC-PLUS programme, which focuses on improving the Miño and Limia transboundary basins in the face of climate change. The actions include automatic hydrological information and water quality systems, drought analysis and flood forecasting.

Currently, the automatic water quality information system has 18 stations and will be increased to 20 with these two actions included in the European programme. For their part, the Portuguese partners are carrying out administrative work to complete the monitoring network in their territory, guaranteeing a coordinated and cross-border approach, according to CHMS sources.

The project is also making progress in the development of a Joint Special Drought Plan, which is already compiling key data and using meteorological forecasts to create protocols that will enable the diagnosis and management of scenarios of prolonged drought and cyclical scarcity, which will enable the planning of meteorological and hydrological forecasts and the development of detailed actions for risk management.
