- Galician and Portuguese institutions are meeting in Ourense to coordinate actions and review hydrological monitoring.
The Miño-Sil River Basin Authority, the Portuguese Environment Agency and the universities of Vigo and Porto met in Ourense to review the European RISC_PLUS project, which focuses on drought and flood management.
The partners in the European RISC_PLUS project held their 27th Joint Working Group meeting in Ourense. The aim was to review the progress of the planned activities and to coordinate the next steps.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Miño-Sil River Basin Authority (CHMS), the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), the University of Vigo (UVIGO) and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), the organisations involved in the project.
With regard to hydrological monitoring, the CHMS reported that work had been completed on 10 of the 11 monitoring stations planned for the Spanish side. Particular mention was made of the completion of work on the new Automatic Hydrological Information System (SAIH) station at Os Peares, on the River Búbal (province of Ourense), and the status of the SAICA station on the River Arnoia, in Allariz, was reviewed.
The Portuguese Environment Agency presented a report on the status of the seven monitoring stations installed in Portugal – comprising two hydrometric and five meteorological stations – which were commissioned during 2025.
The meeting also addressed the analysis of droughts. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Porto presented studies on indicators for assessing drought risk and its evolution under different climate scenarios.
With regard to flooding, the partners reviewed the work on hydrological modelling and the development of forecasting and warning systems, coordinating the integration of the results.
The University of Vigo presented studies on the effects of climate change on socio-economic activities, such as the influence of meteorological variables on potato yields in A Limia and on vineyards in the Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra designations of origin.
This project, co-funded by the European Interreg Spain–Portugal (POCTEP) programme 2021–2027, aims to ensure efficient and sustainable water management through scientific knowledge, cross-border cooperation and technological innovation.
