La Región | New measurement station installed on the Barbaña River to improve hydrological monitoring in Ourense

The Miño-Sil Hydrographic Confederation (CHMS), an autonomous body under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), has completed the installation of a new water level measurement station on the Barbaña River as it passes through the city of Ourense, as part of its plan to expand the Automatic Hydrological Information System (SAIH).

According to the CHMS, the project involved an investment of 48,381 euros, of which 36,285.75 euros have been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg VI A Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2021-2027 program, under the RISC_PLUS project.

The new station will enable the recording and real-time transmission of hydrometeorological data (such as flow levels and precipitation) that will be analyzed from the CHMS Basin Control Center (CECU).

The agency emphasizes that these actions strengthen emergency response capacity in the face of floods or flooding events, while also contributing to more sustainable water use and the prevention of extreme weather phenomena linked to climate change.
