The Miño-Sil Hydrographic Confederation (CHMS), the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), and the University of Vigo (UVigo), partners in the European cross-border cooperation project RISC_PLUS, have just held their 19th coordination meeting, in which the progress achieved was reviewed and the next steps to follow were established to improve the resilience of the international basins of the Miño and Limia rivers against extreme phenomena such as droughts and floods.
During the meeting, issues relating to project management were addressed regarding deadlines and the degree of execution of the activities scheduled in it, with December 31, 2026, being set as the new completion date, with the objective of ensuring compliance with all programmed milestones.
Regarding progress in activities, progress was highlighted in the execution of new control points in the Automatic Hydrological Information System (SAIH) network and the Automatic Water Quality System (SAICA):
In the Spanish part, 9 of the 10 planned stations are already executed, seven from the SAIH System and two from the SAICA System, which will allow better hydrological monitoring and assessment of the status of water bodies in the demarcation.
In the Portuguese part, the 7 stations under execution will be completed by the end of 2025, thus completing the hydrometeorological information of the border basins.
Furthermore, progress was presented in the analysis and prediction of phenomena associated with droughts and floods, as well as in the development of a methodological approach to evaluate their socioeconomic impact in the Galicia – Northern Portugal Euroregion.
With these actions, the RISC_PLUS project continues to consolidate itself as a reference in cross-border international cooperation and innovation in water management, contributing to the fulfillment of European and national objectives regarding climate change adaptation and protection of river ecosystems.
The actions carried out under the POCTEP RISC_PLUS project are co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF/FEDER) through the Interreg VI A Spain – Portugal (POCTEP) 2021-2027 program, which promotes cross-border cooperation projects with the support of the European Union.
