VigoÉ| The UVigo shares with students of Put you Caldelas the system of early alert of floods

  • The Risc_Plus project aims to strengthen the resilience of the Miño and Limia transboundary river basins in the face of climate challenges

The University of Vigo, through the Ephyslab research group, reinforces its commitment to environmental education and climate risk management within the framework of the European Poctep Risc_Plus project.

Researchers Helena Barreiro, Diego Fernández, and José González Cao gave a talk at the IES de Ponte Caldelas, introducing students to the key aspects of climate change and its impact on extreme weather events, with a special focus on floods in the province of Ourense.

During the session, they explained the evolution of these phenomena in the region and presented the Early Warning System, an innovative tool developed within the Risc_Plus project. This system is designed to anticipate and mitigate the effects of floods, improving the preparedness and resilience of affected territories.

The activity not only provided a scientific perspective on hydrometeorological risks but also fostered a space for reflection and debate among students, promoting environmental awareness and the crucial role of science in addressing climate change.

The Risc_Plus project, which also involves the Miño-Sil River Basin Authority, the University of Porto, and the Portuguese Environment Agency, aims to strengthen the resilience of the Miño and Limia transboundary river basins in the face of climate challenges.

In this regard, environmental education is established as a strategic pillar of the initiative, with the conviction that raising awareness and providing knowledge from an early age are key to ensuring a sustainable future.

Through outreach and access to rigorous information about the natural environment, Risc_Plus not only seeks to increase ecological awareness but also to equip new generations with essential tools and values for the protection of water resources and the planet.

With initiatives like this, the project reinforces its commitment to society by bringing scientific knowledge closer to younger generations and promoting a real change in the way climate challenges are understood and addressed, both now and in the future.

The actions carried out under the POCTEP Risc_Plus project are co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg VI A Spain – Portugal (POCTEP) 2021-2027 program, which promotes cross-border cooperation projects with the support of the European Union.
